Camera phones have been a huge success, with unit sales rising from three million in 2001 to 500 million in 2006. It is estimated by some industry experts that their are close to 1 billion camera phones in the world now.

Another reason for the growth of the popularity of these great gifts is the growing popularity of online photo sharing and social networking sites such as myspace, flicker and facebook. These sites allow people to upload their photos and show them to their friends instantly. Now, some people are actually buying cameras specifically to take photos and upload them to these sites.

The fact that film is not an added expense and there isn’t the wait to develop the film also seems to be a reason for the growth in popularity.

The top three companies selling digital cameras in the USA for the third quarter of 2007 are Canon at 23% market share, Sony at 18% and Kodak at 15%. The popularity of Canon’s Powershot brand is one of the main reasons for the company to be at the top spot. Just a couple of years ago Kodak was the leading seller of in the USA, but their sales have fallen compared to Sony’s and Canon’s sales.

So whatever the season is or whomever you are buying a gift for, a digital camera is a good choice and a good bet to put a smile on the face of the receiver of the gift.
